What's Hot from This Kitchen?
Episode Summary
Scott Shepard and Erik Montcalm have been working together for 24 years. In this industry, that kind of staying power doesn't happen by accident.
Scott leads cybersecurity and IT infrastructure at Motorola Solutions. Erik is SVP of Cybersecurity Services at SecureOps, the boutique Canadian MSSP that has been embedded in Motorola's security operations since 2001, when SecureOps built their first SOC from a sequestered closet with a ventilation problem and a guy who wandered in with a backpack saying he knew a few things about security.
That guy is now one of the reasons SecureOps is what it is. And Motorola Solutions is a large part of why.
The relationship works because neither side stays static. Motorola brings SecureOps their hardest problems, not solved, not packaged, but raw and end-to-end, and SecureOps researches, builds, deploys, and eventually brings those solutions to the rest of their customers. Scott calls it "experiment, build, and grow together."
Just like lobster poutine is built in careful layers, fries, then cheese curds, then lobster bisque gravy, then lobster on top, and every layer has to be right for the dish to work, great security defense is built the same way. Each layer exists because the one before it will eventually be breached. The dish only holds together when every ingredient does its job. So does the partnership.
